Introduction to Lu Yonggen
Lu Yonggen, male, born in December 1930, member of the Communist Party of China, former president of South China Agricultural University, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and crop geneticist.
He has successively won the “Outstanding Teacher of Nanyue”, a national model worker in the education system, a national model teacher, the first prize of Guangdong Province Science and Technology Award, the third prize of Provincial Science and Technology Award, the outstanding Communist Party member of Guangdong Province, a model of Nanyue, and a touching Chinese figure of 2017.
Lu Yonggen was born in Hong Kong. He came to the School of Agricultural Sciences of Lingnan University from Hong Kong in 1949 and has since taken root in Guangzhou. He has 70 years of party membership and was frugal and simple throughout his life. He is known as the “Academician of Common People”. I still use old sofas, old TVs and old iron beds from the 1980s. He donated all his life savings of 8.809 million yuan to South China Agricultural University, established the “Lu Yonggen Xu Xuebin Education Fund” and used Komiks to reward poor students and outstanding young teachers. He devoted himself to agricultural education and scientific research with a strong patriotic sentiment, worked silently in the field of rice genetic research, put forward a new view on rice “specific affinity gene” and made outstanding contributions to rice breeding practice, agricultural education and development.

Hello everyone, my name is Dang Linxi, and I am a teacher at South China Agricultural University where Academician Lu Yonggen is located. Today I would like to share with you the story of my old president, Academician Lu Yonggen.
Academician Lu is 89 years old this year and is a simple Grandpa Lu who is well-known to everyone around him. However, this person who dresses simple and has a low-key life suddenly became a national “Internet celebrity” due to a move in 2017. In March that year, he and his wife Xu Xuebin appeared in a bank on Huanong campus with a shabby kraft envelope, and transferred the deposits of more than ten passbooks to the school account, totaling more than 8.8 million yuan! This is the life savings of the two elders. Academician Lu has a daughter, but he chose to donate all the money to the school without any guarantee.
Because each transfer requires a password and signature, it took an hour and a half. And how long did they consider this donation decision? I can tell you that it all happens in a few seconds. That year, Academician Lu was seriously ill. When discussing the arrangements for the funeral with his wife, he said one word: “Donate!” The wife immediately understood and immediately said: “I think so too.” That year, Academician Lu Yonggen was named “Top Ten People Touching China”.
Why did he stay so generous and unreserved? This starts with Academician Lu’s initial life choice.
Lu Yonggen was born and raised in Hong Kong. In this old photo you see, he was wearing a white shirt with a shoulder strap, which was also very fashionable back then. He was born in a middle-class family, and his father was a senior employee of a British law firm. Lu Yonggen received a good Chinese and Western education in Hong Kong since he was a child.
But in 1941, the Pacific War broke out and Hong Kong was occupied by the Japanese army. He was in the sixth grade at the time and was sent back to the countryside of Huadu, Guangzhou to take refuge by his father. Since childhood, he has experienced family hatred and national hatred and witnessed the cruelty of the Japanese army with his own eyes. This painful pain has inspired him to have a strong sense of crisis and feelings for his country.
When he was in high school, he made a different choice from his peers: he gave up on the English school despite his family’s opposition and chose to study in a Chinese school.Continue with the idea of democratic progress.
After that, he actively pursued progress and yearned for communism. In 1949, Lu Yonggen officially joined the Communist Party of China in Hong Kong and became an “underground party member”. Under the arrangement of the party organization, he came to Guangzhou to lead the Underground Student Union and welcomed the release of Guangzhou. During this period, he was admitted to Lingnan University. After the national department adjustment, Lu Yonggen came to South China Agricultural College and met Academician Ding Ying, becoming his first student, and after graduation he became an assistant to Ding Ying’s rice research.
Ding Ying was the dean and Lu Yonggen was a student, but Lu Yonggen successfully mobilized Dean Ding Ying, who was 68 years old at the time, to join the Communist Party of China, which had a huge response among the senior intellectuals in the Cinema district of Guangzhou at that time. In this regard, Lu Yonggen recalled that this “year-old friend” friendship with his teacher has always implied a tacit understanding: “Academic, you are my teacher and my leader, but in politics, I am a pioneer and a progressive young man. I want to tell you the great belief of the Communist Party of China.” In Lu Yonggen’s view, this belief must be practiced forever.

Lu Yonggen often talked about the famous quotes of French scientist Pasteur: “Science has no borders, but scientists have their motherland.” After the reform and opening up, Lu Yonggen went to the United States as a visiting scholar. During his stay in the United States, his relatives in the United States told him that you can live a comfortable life in the United States. However, Lu Yonggen said firmly: “I am Chinese, and the construction of the motherland requires me!”

Lu Yonggen firmly chose to return to his motherland. Under his inspiration, a large number of rice breeding experts also chose to return to China to serve the country. Academician Lu also trained a group of outstanding agricultural scientists. In 2017, his student Liu Yaoguang was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and “one school and three academicians” were also rumored to be a good story.
In the vast land, the lives of farmers have been very hard. How to improve the breeding quality of rice? This is the proposition of Lu Yonggen’s lifelong scientific research. He is committed to the research on genetic breeding of rice and has made breakthrough progress in the fields of rice genetic resources. Theoretical research in this field was once lacking, and basic research was difficult to achieve results, but Lu Yonggen chose to chew this “hard bone”.
He rolled up his trousers and walked barefoot in the farmland, step by step to find the rice’s ancestor “wild rice”, and traveled all over Guangdong, Hainan and Jiangxi.
The collection of wild rice is very difficult, either in the mountains or in the barren swamps, but Luyonggen never gives up. Once, Academician Lu, who was over 70 years old, led a team to the top of a barren mountain in Fogang, Qingyuan to collect wild rice. He climbed halfway up the mountain. Academician Lu was already exhausted, but he still insisted on going up the mountain. The students had to support him and climb up slowly. The mountain road was rugged and steep, with wood and stone passing through the road, and it was extremely hard. After finally climbing to the top of the mountain, everyone was exhausted. The students also wanted him to take a break, but he firmly said, “Look for it! Look for it now!” Fortunately, they finally found the precious wild rice. Seeing the growing environment of wild rice with one’s own eyes, Academician Lu, who was already extremely tired, was extremely excited. He bent down and held the rice ears tightly and said to the students: “As an agricultural scientist, you must lay your roots deep in the soil, and you must observe the scene in person, and you cannot miss a slight detail.”
Lu Yonggen does not care about fame or profit, but he hopes that this life will be meaningful. He is about material thingsThe requirements are extremely low. The office is simple, and the home still uses old iron beds and old TVs from the 1980s and 1990s. People call KomiksCinema the “common academician”. Before being admitted to the hospital for treatment, he came to the office as soon as possible, busy doing scientific research and replying emails. At noon, he would walk to the school cafeteria with an iron lunch box, line up with the students to make meals.
As old, he often carried a shoulder bag and a sun hat, and waited safely on the lush school road, becoming a scenic spot on the campus.

Seeing that his student Liu Xiangdong had the opportunity to study in Hong Kong, but due to financial difficulties and many concerns, Academician Lu borrowed money and provided suitcases and other supplies, encouraging him to succeed in his studies and come back to serve his motherland. At Huadu Luohu Primary School, he even donated the family shops shared by the two brothers for free as an educational fund for children and teachers. So far, this fund has funded nearly 3,000 teachers and students.
Now, Academician Lu is seriously ill in bed due to cancer. In the ward, the old man, who is nearly 90 years old, said: “Although I am now plagued by illness and cannot walk freely, my consciousness is clear. My concerns are unchanged, and my beliefs are firm!”
At the request of Lu Yonggen and his wife, a special temporary party branch was established in the hospital ward. After the successful convening of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the “Temporary Party Branch of Academician Lu Yonggen Ward” held a special organizational life meeting to study the report of the 19th National Congress. Academician Lu was weak, but he still insisted on participating in the study and discussion throughout the process. Academician Lu knew the pain brought to people by disease. Not long ago, he signed a body donation volunteer, hoping to serve as an academician for the final medical science and donate his body to the country’s medical research!
